Introductory
Within the Chinese astrology, the Monkey is the ninth sign out of 12 animals in the cycle. In comparison with the Western Astrology, the Monkey is parallel to that of Leo.

The Monkey sign is denoted by a masculine or the yang sign.

It rules 1 month in the season of Summer, 22 July to 21 August, and 2 segments of the day, 3PM to 5PM.

People who are born within that segment of the day are considered to have the Monkey sign as their ascendant.

Its direction is the West-Southwest and fixed element is Metal.

The Personality of the Monkey
Intelligent, bright, quick-witted and charming, the Monkey finds it impossible to sit still and is easily bored. The Monkey is said to be the cleverest creature of the Chinese Zodiac, and he knows it. The resourceful Monkey loves problem solving and does it well, often thinking out of the box and adapts easily to changing environments. He learns quickly and is also good at languages. The Monkey is also adept at making money and gaining respect.

The nature of the Monkey is his insatiable curiosity. He is curious about anything and everything. However, once his curiosity is sated, he gets bored and moves on. He will always be happy to brainstorm on ideas and concepts but if implementation is slow, the Monkey may not always have perseverance to see a project through. This curiosity also means he finds it difficult to sit still in one place. He loves to travel and see new things and needs to be constantly stimulated otherwise he will lose interest. This constant need for stimulation also means that the Monkey is easily distracted and thus may not accomplish as much as he could.

The Monkey is also mischievous and gives in easily to temptation, often able to use his street smarts to justify anything. Watch out for this trait in the Monkey because even though he never intends to harm, his desire for his own enjoyment may supersede any care for others. It is this cheeky and devil-may-care behaviour that is sometimes what makes him so attractive.

A social animal, the Monkey loves to be with people, and is warm, charming and persuasive. He usually has many friends and is a great entertainer. With his quick mind and attractive personality, he usually wins people over to his point of view very easily. Even if you do not agree with him, you will find it difficult to dislike the Monkey. The Monkey is always endearing, even when you realise that you’re being manipulated!

On the negative side, the Monkey’s intelligence can cross the line to being crafty, deceitful and dishonest if there is an opportunity to make money or win at something. Although the Monkey is a master manipulator, he is smart enough to know when he is on the losing end of a situation and will extract himself from that situation as quickly as possible and sometimes at any cost. This strong survival instinct usually keeps the Monkey looking after his own interests. Therefore, if you ever want to persuade a Monkey to look after your interests, supply him with facts that clearly show him the benefits for himself.

The Monkey is supremely confident even though some Monkeys can hide that behind a demure exterior. This confidence can backfire into a superiority complex where he thinks he knows better than others and hence does not listen to advice well. Insults and criticism also seldom offend him. It is not that he rejects criticism but he truly thinks that you simply must be mistaken since he is the paragon of perfection. He will listen to logic though so once you are able to convince him of a different approach, he will apply his intelligence to immediately fix things.

His easily inflatable ego, if uncontrolled, makes the Monkey very self-centred. This self-centredness is not necessarily negative because often, it is more like a fascination with himself as opposed to wanting to have things for himself. He is constantly amazed at his own genius and if he learns a new trick, he will practice it until he perfects it or gets bored. The Monkey is easily preoccupied with something to the extent of being fixated with it – for as long as his attention span can be held – which is usually not very long. This preoccupation with an activity may seem like selfishness as the Monkey would be completely focused on the task at hand to the exclusion of all else.

The Monkey also likes to win and usually does, but when there’s competition, jealousy can sometimes rear its ugly head although he may never reveal it, so the Monkey needs to learn to rejoice for others.

Financially, the Monkey is good at calculating and would think through any business proposition to ensure that it is financially sound. It’s not that he’s very materialistic but he loves the indulgences in life and having many different interests and hobbies can also be expensive.

With his intellect and charming personality, the Monkey usually gets what he wants with minimum effort. However, Monkeys can work hard but if you want him to be on your team, you have to make sure he gets his just rewards as some Monkeys can be mercenary. Professionally, Monkeys would excel in public relations or be successful lawyers, diplomats, teachers, actors and writers.

The female Monkey is intelligent, well-groomed and well-spoken. She is a born diplomat and rarely makes any social faux pas. Socially, she is an excellent hostess and can grace any social event, whether an elegant soiree or a rowdy nightclub. This happy-go-lucky lady loves the limelight and can be a good entertainer.

She is independent, a good judge of character and can have high expectations. If you work for a Monkey, you had better make sure you deliver what you promise because she can be critical and she will hold you to your word.

The Monkey is a great friend to have and you will never have a dull moment. Harness his intelligence and resourcefulness and you will have an indispensable member of your team. Once he can conquer his need for constant external stimuli, and can focus on the work at hand, his results will speak for themselves. Make him use his skillfulness as a master manipulator for good and the sky’s the limit for what the Monkey can do.

Five Different Types of the Monkey
Metal Monkey (1920, 1980) - The Metal Monkey is ambitious, independent and strong-minded. Financially astute, this Monkey is a good investor and an entrepreneur. He is diligent and hardworking, as well as having the gift of the gab. He is so persuasive that he can even sell ice to Eskimos.

On the personal front, the Metal Monkey is passionate, warm and not shy to show his affections to his loved ones.

However, on the flip side, the Metal Monkey can be arrogant and self-focused. He also may not trust easily or many and thus be an island onto himself. However, being very capable, his independence can be his strength.

Water Monkey (1932, 1992) - The Water Monkey is kind, patient, determined and purposeful. He also works well with people. His pleasant demeanor makes him comfortable to work with. In addition, he has a high EQ which he can utilise to inspire the people around him to rally around and achieve his goals.

This Monkey may look calm and unperturbed but he can be particularly sensitive and take offence easily.

On the other extreme, the Water Monkey can lack focus, be indecisive and inconsistent. He may also tend keep his cards close to his chest and evade direct questions. With more patience to communicate with others and increasing his openness to other people’s opinions, the Water Monkey will excel.
Wood Monkey (1944, 2004) - The Wood Monkey is very principled and seeks respect from others which he often gets. In return, he respects people’s privacy and gets on well with people. He is very organized and down-to-earth, preferring not to take risks where unnecessary.

Constantly curious, the Wood Monkey is always active and seeking new activities to occupy his time. He is innovative and attracted to new challenges, but he can become disheartened when there are obstacles to achieving his goals.

The Wood Monkey is also often dissatisfied with what he has and continues to look for and implement ways to improve his lot. He makes decisions based on his strong intuition, which fortunately usually serves him well.

Fire Monkey (1956, 2016) - The confident Fire Monkey is domineering, often seeking to control and can be stubborn. This stubbornness can work in his favour as it can also manifest as determination.

Extremely competitive in nature, the Fire Monkey is ambitious and has a strong tendency to be fiercely jealous. He has a strong imagination which sometimes works against him as he can get paranoid over other people taking advantage of him. His innate aggressiveness leads him to want the upper hand over others so he often bulldozes his way through.

The Fire Monkey is vibrant and attractive to others and vice versa. He is intelligent, creative and is naturally inclined to being a pioneer.

Earth Monkey (1968, 2028) - The Earth Monkey is cool, unflappable and dependable. An intellectual at heart, the Earth Monkey enjoys learning and academia but may sometimes be seen as odd because his thoughts are too complex to be understood by others.

Behind the calm exterior, the Earth Monkey wishes for respect for and acknowledgement of his skills and contributions and can react negatively if he perceives not to receive it.

While this Monkey is more introverted and has less social skills, he is honest and direct, and is principled and follows the rules zealously. He is very caring to his loved ones and can be generous to others.

Seasons of the Monkey
SPRING
Spring-born Monkeys are extroverts and positive in mindset. They are sociable and have many friends. Armed with a superior intellect, they are fast learners. However, being very bright, they can also get anxious and uneasy. They are also restless and unlikely to stay put in one place for too long, be it geographically or professionally.

SUMMER
Summer-born Monkeys are happy-go-lucky, self-indulgent and attracted to material luxuries. They are less aggressive and do not tend to work too hard, relying on their ability to charm their way or manage the situation into getting what they want. They thrive in the limelight and can be good speakers or writers. Unfazed by anything life throws at them, they cruise along enjoying living to the max.

AUTUMN
Autumn-born Monkeys are more serious and academic. The most stable of the other Monkeys, they will steadily persevere in whatever they are doing and are generally risk-averse. Preferring to err on the side of safety, Autumn-born Monkeys will take their time to make considered decisions. As a result, they are able to achieve long-term goals and maintain better relationships.

WINTER
Winter-born Monkeys are highly intelligent, structured in their thinking, hardworking and controlling, thus they are usually successful in their endeavours. They enjoy challenges and are good at technical tasks, often excelling in professions such as engineers, scientists, IT specialists and programmers.

Characters of the Monkey Child
The Monkey Child is happy and very bright. He can also be so mischievous that you don’t know what to do with him. He will manipulate you and charm his way into getting whatever he wants. And you won’t know it until it’s too late. Although sometimes you will let him get away with it because he is just too smart and too cute.

Naturally curious, the Monkey Child will want to explore everything and do everything and ask you about everything. He loves to learn and absorbs knowledge like a sponge. However, he also gets bored just as easily so learning has to be an interesting experience for him otherwise his attention will be lost.

The Monkey Child is also calculative and selfish, often trying to see what he can get out of other children or his parents. His competitiveness may appear as jealousy when he sees other children having what he thinks is more than he does. It is best to check this selfish and jealous streak from young, but be warned, it will be an uphill task to try to outsmart this young Monkey. Sometimes just when you are sick of his Monkey antics, he will say sorry, turn on the charm and make you forgive him instantly.

The Monkey and His Ascendants
In Chinese horoscopes, a person born during different periods of the day will have an affect on his/her overall personality in various degrees.

For every individual, their personality has a centered “self” and many layers around it. Each layer has a different size, texture and aura, and when combined, it makes up who the person truly is.

Each period of time during the day corresponds to a different Chinese horoscope. So, although it is a person’s individual choice on which path he will take in life, there may perhaps be other “inner voices” which will influence him. These “inner voices”, “other self” or “inner struggle” comes from their conflicting ascendants.

E.g. A Rooster born in the hours of the Ox. In this case, the individual may experience both animal traits to different degrees, hence the conflict.

Your local time should be used when determining your ascendant.

11PM - 1AM: The Rat Hours
A party animal, you live life to the full but without extravagance. With the Rat in ascendance, you are innovative at work, and the soft-hearted friend that you are, you will always try to support the people you care for.

1AM - 3AM: The Ox Hours
A responsible planner and a stickler for the rules, you are hardworking, patient and accountable for all that you do. Quietly going about your business, you are placid and proper as an Ox, never deviating from your principles nor priorities.

3AM - 5AM: The Tiger Hours
The aggression of the energetic tiger coupled with the suspicious and domineering personality of the Monkey could be overpowering. As you have a strong personality, it will be to your benefit to keep a lid on your fluctuating moods.

5AM - 7AM: The Rabbit Hours
The Rabbit here tempers the playfulness and restlessness of the Monkey. Your intuition is heightened and you make great judgment calls. You are more cautious and sensitive when dealing with others, and you also will tend to make more carefully considered decisions.

7AM - 9AM: The Dragon Hours
The flamboyant Dragon in ascendance produces a turbo-charged formidable Monkey who will pull out all stops to achieve grandiose schemes simply just to prove you can do it! This potent combination, if harnessed in a practical manner, empowers you to be successful at anything you wish.

9AM - 11AM: The Snake Hours
This Snake-influenced Monkey is quiet and secretive, never revealing your strategy until the right time. The presence of the mysterious Snake also means that you are very attractive. Ultimately though, the Snake’s wisdom and the Monkey’s cleverness will ensure that nobody can out maneuver you.

11AM - 1PM: The Horse Hours
With the Horse as your ascendant, you are likely to be physically strong, fit and excel in sports. Your decision-making might not be very well thought through but your clever and capable Monkey mind will think of innovative ways to resolve any issues, and with your charming personality, you will always be loved.

1PM - 3PM: The Sheep Hours
While this Monkey might become easily offended or overreact with the Sheep in ascendance, your delightful and amenable character will allow you to create rapport and trust with a broad range of people. You are a good team player and you are also able to garner support from your many friends.

3PM - 5PM: The Monkey Hours
With the Monkey as your ascendant as well as your zodiac sign, you can have double the positive or negative qualities associated with your zodiac sign. On the positive side, you can be highly intelligent, warm, friendly with superb people skills. Not only are you super smart, you are also attractive and ambitious; a super achiever, versatile and fantastic at problem solver all in one neat package.

5PM - 7PM: The Rooster Hours
This Monkey is extrovert, ambitious and will willingly go where angels fear to thread. Adding onto the Monkey’s natural intellect and analytical mind, the Rooster’s tendency to work 24/7 ensures success at whatever this Monkey chooses to do. Don’t forget your Monkey joie de vivre and sense of fun on your way to achieving your goals though.

7PM - 9PM: The Dog Hours
The Dog brings a sense of stability to the errant Monkey. Suddenly, you realise that you don’t have to be always proving yourself and that just being yourself and being liked for who you are could just be good enough. The Monkey with the Dog in ascendant is less consumed with luxuries, is more grounded and becomes as faithful as a dog. The edge is taken off and there is no longer that driving need to attack every challenge life flings at you. You become a pragmatist who is objective, straight talking, protective and honest and people love you for it.

9PM - 11PM: The Boar Hours
This Monkey is less crafty, less self-centred and is more straightforward due to the Boar in its ascendance. You are generous, always willing to help, genuine, loving and faithful to your loved ones and your principles. You will keep your word and will persevere despite all obstacles. As such, people will gravitate to you for advice on anything because you are good at everything.

When Moon Signs Meets Sun Signs
In addition to ascendants, there is also another additional factor which affects an individual's personality: the sun signs. The sun signs, or the Western zodiac sign, parallels the Chinese lunar signs. Based on the month and season of the Rat, it is paired with Sagittarius and thereafter the rest of the sun signs are paired with the concurrent moon signs accordingly.

SAGITTARIUS: 22 November to 21 December
Fire + Negative Fire = Sagittarian Monkey

The Sagittarian’s honourable and idealistic nature complements the Monkey’s natural perseverance and structured thinking, resulting in a principled character with an analytical mind. This intelligent Monkey is strong-willed and is full of enterprise, and he is adept at secretly using his ingenuity to control a situation in order to produce a certain result.

CAPRICORN: 22 December to 20 January
Earth + Positive Metal = Capricorn Monkey

The stalwart, disciplined and honest Capricorn complements the Monkey’s dynamic intellect. Combined together, the best of both worlds merges into a determined personality whose boldness is tempered and stable, resulting in a grounded yet quietly ambitious and clever character.

AQUARIUS: 21 January to 19 February
Air + Positive Metal = Aquarius Monkey

Both the Aquarian and the Monkey are exuberant, strong-willed and lively characters. Both are also intelligent, well-meaning and sincere. The Aquarian is fiercely independent and so is the extrovert Aquarian Monkey. As long as this combination takes the best of the Aquarian and the Monkey, they are fine. Negative traits to watch are a stubbornness and refusal to listen to opposing views and the uncontrolled ego.

PISCES: 20 February to 20 March
Water + Positive Metal = Pisces Monkey

The yin and yang duality of the Piscean brings an intuitive spiritual fluidity to the world of the Monkey. Compassionate and kind, the Piscean puts others needs before their own. These qualities when infused with the highly intelligent and strategic traits of the Monkey, can bring tremendous benefits to the world at large. However, the Pisces Monkey needs to be careful of not getting carried away with idealism and sentimentality which can lapse into melancholy.

ARIES: 21 March to 19 April
Fire + Positive Metal = Aries Monkey

The Aries Monkey is an honest, dynamic and courageous creature. Backed with the Monkey’s brilliance and keen intellect, the fiery Aries is powerful and forceful. Excelling in positions of leadership or pioneering projects, once the Aries Monkey has decided on a course of action, he will embark on it with gusto. Nothing and nobody will stand in his way.

TAURUS: 20 April to 20 May
Earth + Positive Metal = Taurean Monkey

The Taurean is practical, dependable and loyal. Slow and steady, the Taurean does not like to rock the boat and prefers routine over change. This is in contrast to the easily distracted Monkey who has an incessant need for constant change and movement. Combined together, the Taurean Monkey will be grounded and able to settle down long enough for the Monkey’s keen intelligence to work on projects to a stable success.

GEMINI: 21 May to 21 June
Air + Positive Metal = Gemini Monkey

The Gemini Monkey is complex, charming and intuitive, with a brilliant intelligence. Flexible and innovative, this adorable and independent creature has a huge potential to control their world by their mental agility and sheer audacity. Undaunted by obstacles, the Gemini Monkey is very resilient and will find no challenge too difficult.

CANCER: 22 June to 21 July
Water + Positive Metal = Cancerian Monkey

This domesticated, nurturing and conservative Cancerian Monkey is financially stable with an aptitude towards savings. On the other hand, he enjoys creature comforts and a beautiful home. He also revels in exhibiting his achievements in life by owning expensive material goods. Despite his homely exterior, the Cancerian Monkey is keenly intelligent and would successfully outwit any challenger.

LEO: 22 July to 21 August
Fire + Positive Metal = Leo Monkey

The Leo Monkey combines ambition and intelligence, with the dominant and strong-willed Leo curbing the Monkey’s manipulation for a more focused result. The Leo loves the limelight and so does the Monkey, but the Leo Monkey manages to complement that with self-confidence and regal leadership. Sometimes it might seem like the Leo Monkey is nosy but it is not out of ill-intent. All in all, the grand Leo Monkey is a great person to be around.

VIRGO: 22 August to 22 September
Earth + Positive Metal = Virgo Monkey

The Virgin is a meticulous and hard worker while the Monkey is artful. Together, the Virgo Monkey is innovative and logical, with decisions based on facts. The professional Virgo Monkey has an analytical mind and good memory, which contributes to his success. The Virgo Monkey enjoys dissecting a situation in great detail in order to make the best decision. While this is a good basis, the inclination towards perfection may be time consuming.

LIBRA: 23 September to 22 October
Air + Positive Mind = Libran Monkey

The innovative and good-looking Libran Monkey presents himself as a lovely package, with skilful words, cultured, refined and with a love of beautiful things. Libran Monkeys always seem to know the right thing to say at the right time and they also know how to make others feel comfortable. Preferring to avoid confrontation where possible, the Libran Monkey will opt for diplomatic cooperation and in that way, is a pleasure to be with.

SCORPIO: 23 October to 21 November
Water + Positive Metal = Scorpio Monkey

Scorpios are intense, stubborn and determined to succeed. They have a natural curiosity, making the Scorpio Monkey even more inclined to investigate and get to the bottom of every situation. Power and passion are the two driving forces that serve Scorpio Monkeys well, as long as they don't let them deteriorate into self-indulgence or compulsion. The Scorpio Monkey is dependable and works hard to achieve his goals but can get vengeful if crossed, so be warned!

Compatibility and Conflict
The conflict and compatibility chart helps indicate complementary or conflicting horoscope signs. There are often 2 other complementary signs for each horoscope and one conflicting sign for every individual sign. The way to determine this is to place each of the 12 signs in a circle and the sign that is opposite of each other are conflicting, while the signs that form a triangle within that circle are the complementary signs. Aside from these 3 signs, the rest of the signs are compatible but in varying degrees.

The Monkey, the Rat and the Dragon make up the First Triangle of Affinity. This group is action-oriented and can be classified as DOERS. This group of three is quick to take the initiative to move forward and achieve results. They can become irritable if they encounter obstacles or if they are made redundant. Otherwise, they are happy to use their common ambition and drive to work together. Together, they have a strong synergy in their attitude and methods and because of this, the Monkey, Rat and Dragon are a powerful combination.

The Monkey’s nemesis is the Tiger. The Monkey and Tiger are directly opposite each other on the Circle of Conflict. In addition, the fixed elements of the Monkey and the Tiger are also in conflict. The Monkey’s element is metal, which destroys wood, which is the Tiger’s element. The Monkey and Tiger naturally have different perspectives and do not see eye to eye about most things. As a result, even though they do not intend to create friction, things may be tense and unproductive between these two personalities if they had to work together.

The remaining nine signs are compatible with the Monkey as follows.

Ox
The Monkey and the Ox tend to be careful around each other. This is because the naturally intelligent Monkey may find the Ox’s rather slow and meticulous way of doing things annoying. Likewise, the Ox may not understand the Monkey’s colourful and sometimes whacky ideas. However, should they be able to work together to maximize the best from each other, their differences could turn into their strengths.

Rabbit
Both the Rabbit and Monkey are naturally suspicious and inclined not trust others and tend to not reveal their hands. The Rabbit is especially careful unless he shares a common ascendant with the Monkey. Fortunately, they are positive thinkers and like in any good collaboration, if they can overcome their differences for a common goal, the Rabbit could make the Monkey keep his commitments while the Monkey could charm the Rabbit to work together with him.

Snake
The Snake and the Monkey are stubborn characters who would not budge from their stance unless they have a common ascendant and a similar purpose. The suspicious Monkey does not fully trust the Snake and the Snake is also wary of the Monkey’s intelligence. They need to be aware that they should not keep looking for each other’s weak points but instead they should collaborate on their strengths.

Horse
The Monkey and Horse can work together and take advantage of each other’s strengths to accomplish certain objectives. Both can see the bigger picture and will not let minor obstacles stand in the way. However, how well they work together will depend on how pleasant the experience is. Although they are both versatile and flexible, they may drift apart should there be no common cause. The best way for these two to work together in the meantime would be to appreciate each other’s qualities. The Horse’s strength would be his strong but down-to-earth attitude while the Monkey would bring his sharp intelligence and efficient execution to the table.

Sheep
The Monkey naturally does not have anything in common with the reticent Sheep as their personalities are so different. However, the Sheep could benefit from the Monkey’s intellect and dynamism while the Monkey enjoys the Sheep’s fame and renown by association. The Monkey could also create publicity and hype for many talents of the shy Sheep in a mutually beneficial relationship.

Monkey
Although the Monkey-Monkey team could be successful, it could also backfire if they let their jealousy and innate selfishness arise. If they learn to work together instead of trying to outdo each other or manipulate each other to their own detriment, they could combine forces to be a powerful duo. The best way to collaborate would be if they realise that they have the same objectives.

Rooster
The Monkey-Rooster dynamic is also very different. The Monkey may try to use sweet words to flatter the Rooster but if the Rooster tests the Monkey’s patience by taking too long to examine something, the easily bored Monkey might just give up on the collaboration. The Monkey will always look for a quick and easy solution while the Rooster tends to succumb to analysis paralysis. As such, these two different personalities will need a common cause to get along.

Dog
The Dog and the Monkey are an unlikely pair but they seem to be able to get along. This is probably because the Monkey knows the Dog’s character and respects the Dog enough to not aggravate him. The Dog is also tolerant of the Monkey’s schemes, especially if he can also gain from the Monkey’s manipulations. The only possible hiccup in this friendship is that the Dog is in the same triangle as the Horse and the Tiger. As the Tiger is the Monkey’s nemesis, this could be a strain in the Dog-Monkey dynamic.

Boar
The Monkey and the Boar can develop a reasonably good relationship if they realise that they could leverage on each others’ strengths. While both are extroverted and get on well together, they would be able to work together also. The Monkey has an uncanny ability to identify opportunities while the Boar has the financial resources to support the exploitation of the opportunity. The Monkey is more financially careful than the benevolent Boar, so he could also help to look after the Boar’s liberal pockets by anticipating unexpected contingencies.
