Introductory
Within the Chinese astrology, the Dragon is the fifth sign out of 12 animals in the cycle. In comparison with the Western Astrology, the Dragon is parallel to that of Aries.

The Dragon sign is denoted by a masculine or the yang sign.

It rules 1 month in the season of Spring, 21 March to 19 April, and 2 segments of the day, 7AM to 9AM.

People who are born within that segment of the day are considered to have the Dragon sign as their ascendant.

Its direction is the East-Southeast and fixed element is Wood.

The Personality of the Dragon
The Dragon is the most mystical animal in the horoscope. In Asian culture, the dragon has always been synonymous with power, good fortune and majestic strength. It is also the iconic symbol of grandeur and royalty.

To this day, many people believe that those born in the year of the dragon are especially lucky. There is an old Chinese saying that a family that has three dragons will enjoy good fortune. Thus, it is not surprising to find that in Asia, people will look forward to welcoming dragon babies into their families.

The dragon is beautiful, colourful and flamboyant. Hence, the dragon’s pride is as legendary as its good fortune. It’s a well-known fact that this sign is blessed with much luck.

The divine sign is a powerful mix of irrepressible energy, confidence, sheer determination and extreme ambitions. Gifted with high intelligence, the dragon can sniff out an opportunity from a mile, and will not hesitate to take full advantage of it. Their quest for self-sufficiency means that they will have no trouble working long hours, even missing out on social events. Their desire to succeed and persistence will definitely aid them in reaching the top of their professions. However, this may isolate them from their friends and family, as they tend to devote themselves tirelessly to realizing their goals. Some dragons may even prefer to stay single all their lives. If they do choose to marry, however, they might marry at a young age.

The dragon does set himself a high standard of achievement and living. Whatever the dragon does is always done in style and on a grand scale. One might even be tempted to say that the dragon is most comfortable when surrounded by luxury and comfort. It is not unusual to find that the dragon basking in publicity, or being in the center of attention from a young age. The dragon’s outgoing nature and stunning appearance will attract many admirers and friends. Dragons will always have a willing audience wherever he/she goes.

Dragons will not hesitate in speaking their minds. They are very direct to the point of being blunt. Sometimes this can get them in trouble, but they will make amends once they realizes that they have hurt someone. Trust is a huge issue with dragons. They can be unforgiving and merciless when their trust is broken. It takes an eternity for them to forget.

In essence, the dragons are free spirits. They do not look too kindly on petty rules and conformation. They prefer heed their own counsel rather than listen to someone else’s advice. They do not like being tied down and appreciate that ability to pick up and go anywhere, anytime. They will not waste their time over household chores, although they are known to be tidy and neat. They prefer to do the things they enjoy, especially travelling. They like adventure and exploration. So, they will most likely opt for the road less travelled, and the destination not flooded by tourists.

Money matters a great deal to the dragons. Financial security provides them with the “golden passport” to go as they please and do what they like. Being self-reliant is very important to dragons. Therefore, they may tend to invest less time in bonding with families and friends. This independent streak is as evident in the lady dragons, if not more. Hence, you may find dragons burning the midnight oils at the office, rather than dating over romantic candle lit dinners. Lady dragons are very practical, liberated and she knows what she wants out of her life and will work relentlessly to achieve her goals. Do not under-estimate her. The brilliance of her mind can build empires or launch a thousand ships.

Five Different Types of the Dragon
Metal Dragon (1940, 2000) - Of all the dragons, this is the most strong-willed and assertive to the point of being un-bending and critical. This Dragon has no qualms of speaking his/her mind and has zero tolerance for laziness and folly. You can see the Metal dragons leading the armies into the battlefields and will not allow failure to be an option. Metal dragons hold honesty and integrity in the highest regard. They will also valiantly venture where no man has gone before, even if they have to do it alone.

Water Dragon (1952, 2012) - This is perhaps the most patient of all the dragons. Water dragons are intelligent, friendly and more flexible. They are prepared to wait for the fruits of their labour, opting for the strategy that yields the best growth. They prefer to work on their expansion plans that increase with time. Water dragons are more understanding and are willing to work with others. He is more diplomatic than the rest of the dragons and can make a skilled negotiator.

Wood Dragon (1964, 2024) - The most creative of all the dragons, and is capable of coming up with revolutionary original ideas. Wood dragons love investigating theories of cause and effect. This dragon is very much guided by logic. Once he/she has an idea, a plan will be formulated to execute the idea. They also possess the determination and commitment to put their ideas into action. He has shrewd business acumen, but tries not to offend anyone. This dragon can also be very generous, despite being outspoken and proud.

Fire Dragon (1916, 1976) - This dragon is the most ambitious and competitive in the clan of dragons. He works very hard and expects his staff to do the same. He will push even harder if given the room to do so. This dragon gives as good as he demands to get in return. Despite his great leadership qualities, he can be perceived as more of a dictator than an inspiring leader. It would be most beneficial for the fire dragons to include others in their plans and activities, if they want to win the vote of the masses. In essence, these are highly righteous and will go to the ends of the earth to uncover the truth.

Earth Dragon (1928, 1988) - This is the most contemplative of all the dragons, and is often likened to a CEO of an organization. They are also natural organizers, to the point of wanting to manage all of their surroundings, including people. This may run the risk of making them appear like dictators and not effective leaders. However, these earth dragons usually have little trouble winning the support for his ideas and business deals. They are astute businessmen and women with the ability to amass a lot of wealth. They possess a wide range of interests and are well aware of the ins and outs environment.

Seasons of the Dragon
SPRING
Whilst the flowers are blossoming, the Dragon enters the Earth with a presence. Their presence will be shown in different ways. How the weather is at the time of birth will strongly reflect the personality of the child. It is said that when the thunder strikes and the rain pours, a Dragon will be born.
Spring is also a time of awakening from the slumber of winter. So spring Dragons are creative thinkers, self-motivated and go-doers. So, a Dragon goes about his life is very much dependant on the forces present during his birth. Spring is a time for showers and thunderstorms and the unruliness of the weather may also indicate a tumultuous life.

SUMMER
Summer time in Asia is the season of the great monsoon rains and terrific typhoons. Thus, a Dragon child born during this period would expect a colourful life. In ancient times, a baby born with lightning and thunder foretells the arrival of a great leader.

So, a majestic Dragon is usually born during this season. A summer Dragon would come to possess many leadership skills and are predisposed towards being dynamic, forceful and conceited. They will never make a halfway attempt at anything. Everything they do will be done with everything they have got. Summer dragons are the most idealistic of all.

AUTUMN
The cooler winds of autumn bring about a cooler, calmer and less critical Dragon. Superficially, the autumn Dragon seems not as intense as his brethren but they are still as resolute and is definitely a master of pure and effective effort. They are unperturbed by challenges and will take on difficult tasks with an unrelenting religious zeal.

Dragons of autumn are clearly admired for their leadership and continuous climb up the peak of perfection. An autumn dragons’ life would typically be smooth sailing unless he is overly self-sustaining. Anyway, all dragons are highly independent and require little support. Dragons born in the evening are less expressive than those born during the day, especially those born in the morning.

WINTER
The wintery chill brings about a quiet nature in a Dragon but no less resolute or demanding in character. They are powerful allies because they are headstrong and dedicated in their beliefs but when opposed, they are almost unyielding and unreasonable in their stand. They are completely enveloped in their beliefs and like a train careening towards its destination; they would never change their course once its set.

A force not to be reckoned with, a winter Dragon would be a powerful leader that will lead his flock up the mountain of success or down to the deepest valley of failure. Whatever it is, the winter Dragon will never slow down or ever develop self-doubt. Such a powerful headstrong character coupled with unmatched endurance will surely bring the Dragon with great success and recognition.

Characters of the Dragon Child
The little Dragon child is full of life and possesses innovative thinking. This child will be powerful, dynamic and without fear. Almost nothing will stop this child from his optimistic outlook on life. He will intelligently develop his very own ideas about life with little help from others. This child would also be very respectful of elders and perform all instructions to the tee.

This passionate child will quickly develop admirations and devotions towards an ideal or a person whom he considers worthy. Therefore, the child will have many idols - people in his life that he looks up to. A bright child who is assertive and self-sufficient, he will be tough and can be teased but will also be quick to assert his rights. Often outspoken and ambitious, the dragon child would seek responsibilities to feel grounded and useful. Even repetitive and boring tasks would be transformed into something worthy of a prize. However, the domineering streak within the child should be held in check at this early age or he would turn out to be a bully.

The child like many his age should be made to feel he is well regarded. The child would then naturally win his integrity and would prefer to be useful instead of just being loved. The sincere efforts of this child should be praised, as he would work very hard to earn it. Never belittle his efforts no matter how trivial it might seem, as the child would make sincere effort at everything including trivial chores. The Dragon child would have tremendous self-esteem and even his dreams would seem tangible and reachable. The child will be emotional especially when he fails but once he realizes his mistake, he will not need to be reproached, as he will be the first to admonish himself and would be quick to make amends.

Last of all, the Dragon child will ensure that he never disappoints his parents and will be strong, idealistic and ensure that he excels. This child is born to lead and will do his utmost to prove himself worthy for his parents to be proud of him.

The Dragon and His Ascendants
In Chinese horoscopes, a person born during different periods of the day will have an affect on his/her overall personality in various degrees.

For every individual, their personality has a centered “self” and many layers around it. Each layer has a different size, texture and aura, and when combined, it makes up who the person truly is.

Each period of time during the day corresponds to a different Chinese horoscope. So, although it is a person’s individual choice on which path he will take in life, there may perhaps be other “inner voices” which will influence him. These “inner voices”, “other self” or “inner struggle” comes from their conflicting ascendants.

E.g. A Rooster born in the hours of the Ox. In this case, the individual may experience both animal traits to different degrees, hence the conflict.

Your local time should be used when determining your ascendant.

11PM - 1AM: The Rat Hours
The Dragon’s renowned generosity is counter-balanced with the frugality of a Rat. The Rat’s influence brings much charm and affection to the strong-willed and outspoken Dragon. A charismatic and expressive Dragon, you will still be logical and decisive with your decisions that are tempered with a hint of the Rat’s infamous shrewdness and uncanny ability to control situations. You will be skilful to achieve your aims without resorting to the normal Dragon forcefulness.

1AM - 3AM: The Ox Hours
The Ox drives a slow and cautious cart at arriving to a decision. Thus, the Dragon would seemed slow-moving and would need to be sure of what he’s doing before reacting. Nevertheless, you are still a fire-breathing Dragon with the extra ability to charge at those who dare cross your path. The Ox’s trust-worthiness and self-restraint would make you more enduring and patient. A dedicated person, you will bear the world’s burdens on your shoulders if you truly believe in it.

3AM - 5AM: The Tiger Hours
The impulsive Tiger would make you thrive on emotional reasons instead of intellectual, rational reasons. The Dragon is ever ready to enter battle with upraised war banners and the Tiger adds to this idealistic nature of the Dragon. Full of energy, dynamic, helpful and optimistic, you must learn to deal with problems and setbacks calmly instead exploding and placing the blame upon those closest to you.

5AM - 7AM: The Rabbit Hours
With the rabbit’s influence, you will have great energy and diplomacy. You will also be a quiet and subdued Dragon that is prone towards sound judgment and decision-making. Powerful, subtle and perceptive, you will make good use of the Rabbit’s prudence and thus be more successful and popular than other Dragons because of your social skills. You could be intensely popular within influential circles due to your powerful advice and unmistaken views.

7AM - 9AM: The Dragon Hours
This intense combination would make you a pure Dragon personality. You will be hard to be missed or ignored. You will have the tendency to receive unquestioning devotion and dedication from others. Thus, your charisma will enable you to start a cult of your own or you could just enjoy the adulation of your large following. You will have the unique capability to give as much as you receive. Therefore, your courage and influence will be strongly felt by others.

9AM - 11AM: The Snake Hours
The beguiling snake is prone to be subtle and introverted, which makes the perfect mask for the Dragon’s grand ambition and megalomania. Therefore, the Dragon is able to plot and carry out his plans effectively with calm assurance. You will be alluring, quick-witted, smart and elegant to many, making you stand out from the rest. Your only drawback would be the Dragon’s judgmental and idealistic attitude and the Snake’s ever-present suspiciousness.

11AM - 1PM: The Horse Hours
The Horse’s influence makes you enjoy life, carefree and action-oriented. You are a gambler with your sight set at high stakes and are skillful but aggressive in your dealings. When you are on your wrong side, you become rebellious, recalcitrant and unreasonable. Fortunately, the Dragon’s innate sense of duty will balance this Horse’s trait. You are very swift and confident, making you a fast learner and this makes you an almost naturally gifted athlete with unnaturally fast reflexes. You will have a good life once you have rein-in the Horse’s raging temper and impulsiveness.

1PM - 3PM: The Sheep Hours
The Sheep influence brings humility and deep comprehension of the Dragon’s abilities and drawbacks. Possessing a creative streak with kind and compassionate heart, your decisions will always tend towards peaceful solutions to conflicts. Empathetic towards others with a broad view of things, you will always find a peaceful solution to conflicts without resorting to the Dragon’s brute force. You will be well loved and popular while the Dragon in you will ensure you are not taken advantaged of.

3PM - 5PM: The Monkey Hours
This is a win-win combination of a solution maker and overachiever. This superstar will be the darling in any circle and yet on the inside, you are made of steel and nothing will throw you off-balance. Perceptive, industrious and creative, you are a unique Dragon that sets your own rules and have no problem rallying support from others.

5PM - 7PM: The Rooster Hours
Just like how a Rooster crows at dawn, the Dragon will have similar pride and diligence. A tenacious, strange and hard worker, you will be looked upon as creative and unyielding in your dedication to your goals. Those who oppose you will have hard time but at least there will never be a dull moment in your company.

7PM - 9PM: The Dog Hours
The canine influence will make you a very practical down-to-earth person with workable ideas and a well-liked disposition. You are loyal, honorable and noble with your intentions and you will care for others deeply. The battles you fight are more for your ideals rather than your ambition or even your supersized Dragon ego. You aim to be helpful, courageous and compassionate, thus making you the perfect social worker and champion of the downtrodden. However, you still have a nasty temper when provoked.

9PM - 11PM: The Boar Hours
The Boar influence will make you an affectionate Dragon whose sole passion is working for the benefit of others. You are altruistic, sometimes conservative with your ideals and may even come across as naïve and indulgent at times. You are deft at marrying the Pig’s indulgent quality with the Dragon’s resolute sense of duty. You have a commanding presence and you will draw all manner of people to your circle of influence and inspire them with your leadership.

When Moon Signs Meets Sun Signs

SAGITTARIUS: 22 November to 21 December

The person born under these signs will develop unparalleled clarity combined with the authoritativeness that is absolute and unchallenged. The Aquarian Dragon is in constant state of reinvention, changing to improve things in his own way. The majestic Dragon will hate deceit and the Aquarian in him will be deft at handling difficult people and situations. This person can be characteristically impulsive and unorthodox but never with a bad intention. Both signs make him forgiving but the Dragon side would still become angry when provoked.

PISCES: 20 February to 20 March
Water + Positive Wood = Piscean Dragon

The unassuming Piscean holds tremendous amounts of energy and the Dragon fuels with great ambition and thrilling sense of excitement to the otherwise calm and trivial existence. The Pieces influence is beneficial to ensure that the Dragon’s unrestraint fiery breath do not go overboard in asserting himself.

ARIES: 21 March to 19 April
Fire + Positive Wood = Aries Dragon

The bright Aries loves to light the path for others to follow. Combined with the Dragon’s majestic need to shine and carry the responsibility towards the unfortunate. Owing to the Ram’s unrivalled energy, he is blessed to be perpetually optimistic and possessing contagious enthusiasm. Thus, he will be popular but he will also be destructively domineering, arrogant and reckless. He must have all or nothing at all, which leaves room to go up or down. When challenged, the Aries Dragon is a formidable opponent.

TAURUS: 20 April to 20 May
Earth + Positive Wood = Taurean Dragon

The mundane Dragon is endowed with supreme might due to practical, earthbound goals of the Taurus. At times, the reliability and predictability of the Taurean is overshadowed by the Dragon’s majesty so he will be short of guile and pretense. The Taurean Dragon is distinctive, a little arrogant and is a slow mover. He is trust-worthy, impartial and competitive person that makes him make the right choices.

GEMINI: 21 May to 21 June
Air + Positive Wood = Gemini Dragon

The superfast pair will be a whirlwind of activity. The Gemini Dragon will be swift, nimble and courageous and will have the tremendous capability to do anything himself. The Gemini’s mind is clear and sharp while the Dragon is full of courage and determination to make things work. This combination will have success if he puts some emphasis to detail, which is lacking in both signs. Anyhow, the Dragon’s leadership proclivity and the Gemini’s ability to connect with people will ensure a substantial circle of influence.

CANCER: 22 June to 21 July
Water + Positive Wood = Cancerian Dragon

The mutually beneficial combination of water and wood ensures the charm of the Cancerian and the regal dignity of the Dragon goes hand-in-hand. The Cancerian Dragon is not as forceful as other Dragons but will naturally possess the quiet air of authority. The Dragon is naturally idealistic while the Crab is spiritual and possessive. The Cancerian is slow learner but what is learned is for life. The Cancerian aspect does downplay the Dragon’s need to perform. The Dragon’s strength is also watered down by the acquisitive tendencies of the Crab. The Cancerian Dragon is fun to be with as he is receptive and accepting.

LEO: 22 July to 21 August
Fire + Positive Wood = Leo Dragon

This magnificent pair is breath taking and will always be larger than life. He will be extremely self-assured of his right to dominate and rule over others. The Leo Dragon is a superior performer who would have substantial ammunitions. The Lion provides the indomitable Dragon with more explosives than is needed. So this personality can be insolent and difficult to manage when the other party doesn’t yield. He is still generous and do not hold grudges. Outrageous words are merely his means to clear the air. This sign is also blessed with good fortune and will always keep up with his promises and charitable to the unfortunate.

VIRGO: 22 August to 22 September
Earth + Positive Wood = Virgo Dragon

Both signs have many outstanding qualities and this makes Virgo Dragon extremely self-assured and leans heavily towards the pursuit of knowledge. However, it is the Virgo side that will be more realistic of the two and also the slower one. The person born under this sign will thirst for knowledge and perfection. It is natural for him to shine but will be bitter and resentful when opposed. He will be unyielding to defeat but will be guilty of overdoing certain things and would try to right some wrongs without going through the proper channels and methods.

LIBRA: 23 September to 22 October
Air + Positive Wood = Libran Dragon

The person born under this sign will be affable and lovable person without the scary persona of some of the other Dragons. The Libran Dragon is non-aggressive, a rare Dragon that is truly a people’s person and here the balance is tipped in Dragon’s favour with his other qualities of allure, drive but he will not be as dependable as other Dragons. However, this person will be truly honest of his opinion with no ‘airs’.

SCORPIO: 23 October to 21 November
Water + Positive Wood = Scorpio Dragon

The scheming Dragon paired with the passionate Scorpio means a boost to the Dragon’s boundless energy. Both signs have tremendous amounts of energy and commanding presence. These unbridled amounts of energy could be detrimental if it is not channeled in the right way. But underneath all that charm is a hard character, and holds no qualms about expressing his preferences. So, the person could turn out really good or really bad depending on how the energy is channeled.

Compatibility and Conflict
Those born under the sign of the Monkey, Snake, Rooster and Rat are most compatible with the dragons. The Dragon will also get along well with those born under the sign of the Horse, Goat, Rabbit and Pig, but not with those born under the sign of the Tiger, Dog and Ox. Two Dragons will also make a good couple, as they will understand one another well.

Monkey
The Dragon is most compatible with the monkey because the Monkey and Dragon are progress-oriented signs. They are experts in the realm of creativity and innovation. They would appreciate each other’s way of accomplishment and leadership. They are full of life, energy and initiative, making them a dynamic duo.

Snake
Snakes will generally find the Dragon’s bravery and disposition towards success very attractive and has no qualms about assisting the Dragon with their mutual aims. Relationship between these two signs is easier because they have a mutual need for each other. The Snake’s practicality and determination is greatly admired by the Dragon while the Dragon’s unyielding determination would be alluring to the Snake. Both parties would share a particular affinity with their mutual ambitions.

Rooster
The Rooster’s prowess is particularly attractive to the Dragon and the Rooster would admire the Dragon’s unbridled energy and determination. They would both work towards their mutual aims of success, wealth and contentment. In order to achieve a happier relationship, both parties should lessen their presumptions and learn to give and take. The Rooster is able to take the Dragon’s arrogance and confidence and the Dragon is able to withstand the precise ‘hen-pecking’ criticism of the Rooster. Both would also engage in passionate fights with each other.

Rat
The Dragon is also most compatible with the Rat because like the Monkey, the Rat and the Dragon are progress-oriented signs. They are experts in the realm of creativity and innovation. They would appreciate each other’s way of accomplishment and leadership. They are full of life, energy and initiative making them a dynamic duo.

Rabbit
Both the Dragon and the Rabbit will have many things in common. The Dragon would be greatly benefitted by the Rabbit’s sensitivity and sound thinking while the Rabbit would great inspired by the Dragon’s strength and leadership. The Rabbit tend to prefer indirect methods and work behind the scenes to influence situations and people. Therefore, the Rabbit may shy away from the forthright and confrontational Dragon. However, the Rabbit would be able to render excellent advice and assistance to the Dragon’s tarnished image.

Pig
The straightforward and earnest nature of the Pig will be in good company with the Dragon and be amongst his group of loyal supporters. There wouldn’t be much room for disagreement and conflict between a Dragon and a Pig. Since both parties do place a certain emphasis on commitment and openness in a relationship so both will work passionately for it. On the negative trait, the Pig would tend to be lackadaisical about certain issues, which would irk the Dragon, while the Dragon would be too forceful and arrogant for the amiable Pig.

Tiger
This pair would only fair a moderate success and tremendous fireworks would mar the course of the relationship. Since both parties are easily irked and would be extremely expressive of their disagreements. There would be a power struggle between the two since both wants to be the dominant one. In order for the relationship to succeed, both parties must learn to come to terms with their disagreements and compromise. Fortunately, both are just as equally forgiving and willing to pick up the pieces where they have left off.

Dog
The Dragon and the Dog would have the deepest personality clashes and are incompatible since they are of polar opposites with each other. Therefore, such relationships are more likely to be unsuccessful.

Ox
Both the Ox and the Dragon would have the most mutual respect for one another and would be able to work together to achieve mutual aspirations. The Ox may be unyielding when the overzealous Dragon try to dominate the relationship. Therefore, it would be wise to come to a mutual agreement early in the relationship on the roles and responsibilities of each party to prevent unnecessary power struggles. However, the Ox would be a hardworking partner worthy of the most discerning Dragon.

Dragon
The Dragon union would have a lot in common as they would be equally fixated with the same issues or they would not be interested at all. There is an issue with such a union in which they would both vent their tremendous energy and zeal towards peripheral people with unrelenting force. A binding factor would usually be spiritual beliefs or politics of both parties.

Sheep
The union between a Sheep and a Dragon would be within acceptable range. Dragons who protect the peaceful Sheep and do not demand too much from the Sheep would ensure a healthy relationship. However, the Sheep is ever willing to allow the dynamic Dragon take charge of the relationship. The Dragon could provide the leadership in the relationship and even inspire the Sheep to be creative if the Dragon would do it in a less aggressive manner.
